Everything you need to know before your first chimpanzee trek in Kibale Forest

Home to over 1,500 chimpanzees and 13 other primate species, Kibale Forest National Park in western Uganda is one of the best places in Africa to see wild chimpanzees. At Tinkerbird Lodge, we’re lucky to be located just minutes from the park, making us the perfect base for your chimpanzee tracking adventure.

Whether you’re a nature lover, first-time trekker, or wildlife photographer, here’s what to expect and how to prepare for this unforgettable experience.

Where the Tracking Takes Place

Chimpanzee tracking takes place deep within Kibale Forest, where trained rangers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority guide small groups through the jungle in search of habituated chimpanzee families. The forest is rich with biodiversity and the experience feels like stepping into another world filled with natural wonder.

Best Time for Chimpanzee Tracking

Tracking is available twice daily, in the morning and afternoon. Morning treks usually offer a better chance to see chimpanzees being active, feeding, and interacting with each other. The earlier hours also provide cooler weather and better lighting for photography.

What to Expect During the Trek

Chimpanzee tracking is moderately challenging, with treks lasting between two to four hours depending on the location of the chimpanzees. Once a group is found, you are allowed to spend up to one hour observing them. Expect to see them grooming, feeding, playing, or calling to one another across the forest canopy.

What You Should Bring

It is recommended to wear comfortable walking or hiking shoes and long-sleeved clothing to protect yourself from insects and thick vegetation. A rain jacket, insect repellent, and drinking water are also essential. Bring a camera, but remember that flash photography is not permitted during the experience.

Tips for First-Time Visitors

Book your tracking permit in advance, as daily slots are limited. Tinkerbird Lodge can assist you with the booking process and transport arrangements. Once in the forest, follow your guide’s instructions carefully and keep noise levels low to improve your chances of close sightings.

Staying at Tinkerbird Lodge

After a rewarding trek, Tinkerbird Lodge offers the perfect retreat with forest-view cottages where you can relax and even enjoy sightings of primates and birds right from your balcony. The lodge provides easy access to the park and a tranquil atmosphere for rest and reflection.
