A bird lover’s guide to Kibale’s colorful residents
Tucked at the edge of Kibale National Park, Tinkerbird Lodge is a birder’s paradise. With over 375 bird species in the surrounding forest, guests have the unique opportunity to spot some of Uganda’s most stunning birds right from their balconies, on guided tours, or along the lodge’s nature trails.
Great Blue Turaco
The great blue turaco is a large, striking bird known for its brilliant blue and green plumage and slow, gliding flight. It’s commonly seen moving through the treetops near the lodge and is one of the most photographed birds in the region due to its vibrant colors.
Green-Breasted Pitta
A rare and elusive forest gem, the green-breasted pitta is a highlight for serious birders. Though difficult to find, it has been recorded along nearby trails early in the morning. Its emerald and rust-colored feathers blend into the forest floor, making every sighting a special moment.
African Grey Parrot
These intelligent and vocal birds are often heard before they’re seen, flying in pairs or small flocks above the canopy. Known for their exceptional mimicry skills, African grey parrots are among the most fascinating birds you can encounter during your stay.
Black-and-White Casqued Hornbill
With its oversized bill and echoing call, the black-and-white casqued hornbill is a spectacular sight. Frequently seen in fruiting trees, this bird’s flight pattern and loud wing beats make it hard to miss, even from your room’s balcony.
Yellow-Rumped Tinkerbird
The lodge’s namesake, the yellow-rumped tinkerbird, is a small but spirited bird with a rapid, rhythmic call that echoes through the forest. Easily spotted in nearby shrubs and treetops, it’s a delightful reminder of the beauty and personality found in even the smallest forest dwellers.
